For the honour of Grayskull

Months ago Red (I think  Wink) inspired me to learn how to crochet.  I have finally managed to actually finish a project.  It's nowhere near close to her level yet of course.  But I was so proud of myself I just had to share.  Here is the purse I just finished for Sarah;

I tried to knit a baby blanket when I was pregnant with Sarah.   had a kit that came with everything you needed including the knitting needles and a full set of instructions.  I was supposed to knit it in strips and then sew the strips together.  Well I knitted all the strips.  But then when I went to put them all together they were all very drastically different sizes Cheesy  So now I have these strips of blanket sitting in my closet that I don't know what to do with, but can't bear to throw out, that Colin teases me about all the time.

That's actually what drew me to crochet instead, was the possibility of making a whole blanket without having to sew strips together Grin

That's too funny Kapi.  My friend Angie has started to crochet--she started out trying to teach herself to knit but switched because the crocheting was easier.  Cheesy  I just need to take the time to sit down and teach myself, I KNOW I can do it.

Haha, what's really funny is when I went to the thrift store to buy some crochet hooks (having never actually even seen one) I saw what I thought were 2 types.  The regular type and what I figured was the deluxe model with pretty wooden handles and a little latch at the top.

Then a few weeks later I was at the craft store with mom and I was looking for some more of the deluxe model cause I wanted some more sizes but all I could find were the plain ones.  I started describing what I was looking for to her and she started laughing her butt off.  She went over to the next aisle and came back with the same tool I had bought at the thrift store.  Apparently I had bought latch hooks for rug making not deluxe crochet hooks.

So mom lent me her crochet set so I could try it instead of my latch hooks, and I hated them.  The latch hooks work so much easier lol.  So now I do all my crochet work with those instead of actual crochet hooks.

So you use a latch hook to crochet.  I have never heard of anyone doing that.  I am entirely too uptight to crochet or knit.  I have tried both.  I crosstitch and do beadwork.  It does not matter that I make my stitches really tight in either so it is better for me.  Especially the beadwork.  I will have to post one of the things I have made.

OMG I don't know how you do it, Kapi! But it came out beautifully!

I crochet, a heckofalot. And, I embroider, too! I cannot, however, build my dexterity to knit -- it's as if there is one too many needle. I also cannot cross stitch as I lack the patience. Go figure...?

I've never heard of anyone using a latchhook either, but I did that whole purse using one.  I like it cause it seems easier to keep my tension even.  I'm having trouble using it on projects where a looser weave is necessary though.  It's way to easy to tighten.  So I'm trying to learn how to use the real crochet hooks too.

You used a latch hook to make that??!!!  OMG, did you just invent a new craft? LOL, how do you keep the latch open when you're stitching?

Very nice purse BTW :)

I was just showing my mom how it works yesterday, it's soooooooo much easier.  A little flick of the wrist opens the latch, the sharper hook makes it really easy to hook the next stitch on, pull it/them past the latch, then yarn over inside the latch and pull through.  The latch automatically closes and the stitches on your hook just slide over, easy peasy.  The only thing crappy about it is trying to find the guage, but since I"m only trying to make toys, not clothes, that hasn't mattered to me.
