Let us now discuss art and artists.

My dear little artists, you know I love you. You know that I am so proud of the way you figured out perspective at age 5. I think it is way cool how you can make 3d paper models without a pattern. You have explored oil pastels, markers, colored pencils, acrylics, watercolors, and oil paints.

Ah yes, the oil paints. Yes, your mom was completely, utterly insane to let you try those. First of all, they must be cleaned up with turpentine. Then, they take forever to dry, so the wet paintings must sit on the easel forever. But despite this, you were really good about keeping them under control.

Until this evening.

What, may I ask, posessed you to paint on the desk, without a dropcloth? What made you think that putting your wet brushes down on said desk was a good idea? Can I remind you of the, oh, 10 BILLION times I have laid out the ground rules for oil painting? You have successfully painted without trashing the basement many times. Why today, when I have to go to a rehearsal later and had to cook dinner, did you decide to ignore the oil painting rules in your artistic fervor?

But I will have revenge. Your father is much, much, less patient about the oil painting than I am, and you have to explain that unholy mess to him. Good luck.

Oh, a shit fit was had, when I came home from rehearsal and found:

-K had trashed his shirt by going back downstairs and painting more, without putting on the required smock
-T had not finished half of his homework, and the half he did do was crap
-The laundry, which was the boys' chore for the day, had not been finished (there was ONE load to do. ONE.)
-The Lego AT-AT (which the boys saved for 10 months to buy) was in a million pieces on the upstairs landing
-The water on the basement floor had not been vacuumed up AND the hubby in charge of the vacuuming was sitting on his ass on the couch with a glass of wine.

Mommy was not pleased. At all.
