All double talk. All the time.

No surprises in the latest report on causes of death in Canada. Old people die of cancer and heart disease. Hey, they're old, we kept 'em alive long enough.

But here's what makes me scratch my head. It's nothing we don't all already know intuitively, but here's the facts

32% of the deaths of people aged 15-24 years old are from, you guessed it, car accidents. Yup, one in 3 dead teen or young adult died in a car accident.

18% of deaths in that age group are from suicide.

No other single cause of death comes anywhere close to those two numbers.

No Tuz, 18% of deaths in that age group are from suicide. It's a few hundred people out of a few million.

What hits me in the face is that half of the teens and young adults who die are in these two very preventable categories

Yep - the top three causes of death in the US are all preventable: car accidents, suicide, and unintentional injuries (i.e. doing something stupid that could possibly kill you).  That's like a standard health textbook chapter one topic.

The suicide figure is higher since a lot of accident related deaths (in this age range especially) are suicides that could not be proven as vehicular suicides.  Very depressing stuff.

I read this the other day and made me think of this thread - forgot to post until now (this really bothered me for a while after reading)

I know I sound callous but IMO, if you're going to end your life...leave everyone else alone...this really bothered me for a while after reading...

I agree completely.  You're not being an ass; you're being realistic.

In the Chicago area, a woman wanted to end her life so she blew through a red light at a busy intersection, traveling at a high rate of speed.  Did she die or was she injured?  Of course not.  How about the three people who were in the car that she creamed?  Dead.  The unfortunate part?  I think she may have only spent about 18 months in jail.

I agree Forrest. Especially when kids are involved.

Extra especially when they're your own kids.   Cry It makes the phrase "I brought you into this world, I can take you out..." way too ominous.

She was deemed mentally ill or something, which apparently justified a totally lesser charge than murder or homicide.
